Contrary to popular belief, you can wear sequins at any time of the day! Categorizing sequins as a nighttime outfit only, is one of the myths I’ll be addressing in this article.
Before now, most of us pop out our sequin attire only during celebration hour. Sequins are well known for their attention-seeking sparkle, little wonder it’s only associated with parties and celebrations.
While fashion trends are constantly changing, one thing we can be sure of with regards to fashion is that rules were meant to be broken.
Thinking about it now, we’re not even sure who made these rules in the first place!
In this article, we’ll be debunking 10 myths surrounding sequins, looking beyond their association with special occasions, and how to embrace sequins in our everyday wardrobe.
Walk with me.
10 Myths about Sequins
Myth 1: Sequins are for Nights Only
This is the first myth that deserves a strike out. It is both untrue and limiting. Sequins aren’t just reserved for evening and nighttime only.
True they add a touch of glamour to nighttime outfits, you can also style sequins in a more casual way for daytime wears.
To achieve this, opt for sequin tops paired with jeans or plain pants. You can also add sequins to your daytime outfits by wearing sequin accessories to add sparkle to your outfit.
Myth 2: Sequins are Uncomfortable to Wear
Most people shy away from sequins due to comfortability concerns. Most people just flowed with the assumption that the texture of sequined fabric is scratchy or rough. I was most people until I decided to give it a try.
I realized that modern sequined wears are designed with comfort in mind. They feature soft lining and lightweight materials that allows you easy movement.
Myth 3: Sequins are High-Maintenance
This is another common misconception about sequins. I used to believe that sequined clothing requires high maintenance and delicate care. While it’s not totally untrue, sequins are not as delicate as we make it out to be.
As a matter of fact, most sequined wears are machine washable and require little to no special care.
Your sequined dress, tops or jacket can maintain their regular sparkle for a long period of time as long as you handle and store them the proper way.
Myth 4: Sequins are only for Younger Generation
SAYS WHO?!
Many believe that sequins are only suitable for younger women or eccentric fashionistas. This is not true.
There are various ways to style sequins to suit different personal styles and individuals of all ages. It doesn’t matter if you prefer a subtle touch of sparkle or full-on sequin adornment, there’s a sequined piece for you.
Myth 5: Sequins are Tacky
This is one of the commonest myths about sequins. Most people believe that sequins are loud and overly flashy.
I’d say that totally depends on how you style it. Sequins can be tastefully blended into your outfit if you do it right, adding a touch of glamour and sophistication.
For instance, pairing a sequined top with plain pants provides some sort of balance to your overall outfit as opposed pairing a sequined top with sequined pants.
Only people who lack fashion etiquette will see sequins as tacky.
Myth 6: Sequins are only for Women
Now that’s not true.
Sequins are not exclusive to one gender. Men can also incorporate sequins into their outfits through the likes of embellished shirts, statement jackets, or accessories like bow ties and long ties.
Sequins are versatile and can add sophistication to any outfit regardless of gender.
Myth 7: Sequins are only for Formal Occasions
This is another sequin myth I’m here to bust.
While it is true that sequins add sparkle to your formal evening gowns, they are not limited to formal occasions.
Sequined pieces can be dressed up or down, this feature makes it suitable for a wide range of occasions. Parties? check, night out? check, Brunches? also check.
With the right styling, sequins can be worn for almost any occasion.
Myth 8: Sequins are Outdated
Some people perceive sequins as old fashioned or outdated, identifying them with retro or vintage styles. This, however, is untrue.
Sequins have stood the test of time, and they continue to be a popular choice in contemporary fashion.
Till date, fashion designers still include sequins in their collections in more innovative and modern ways.
Myth 9: Sequins are only for Certain Body Types
This is quite laughable. Whoever came up with this must have been high on something.
The misconception that sequins draw attention to perceived flaws or they only flatter certain body types has been around for some time and it’s time to address that.
This has nothing to do with the fabric itself but the outfit style you choose.
For instance, a bodycon sequin dress will suit someone with spoon body shape and may not properly flatter someone with inverted triangle body shape. The latter should go for an A-line sequin dress for better fitting. That’s simply how it works.
In essence, to feel confident in your sequin outfit, go for pieces that suit your body type.
Myth 10: Sequins are always Overpowering
Do Sequins make a powerful fashion statement? Yes
Are sequins overpowering? No
Depends totally on how you wear it, if you’re wearing sequins from head to toe of course it can feel loud and overpowering. Subtle sequin details can add just the right amount of sparkle to your outfit without overwhelming the overall look.
If you’re wearing a formal sequin evening dress for instance, ideally that should be paired with non-sequined shoes. Picking out shoes to wear with a sequin dress can make or mar your outfit.
