Simply put, when your overall outfit from head to toe is pieced together in a variation of a single color, that’s a monochrome outfit. For instance, wearing navy blue pants with a baby blue shirt styled with Persian blue shoes & handbag.

Often times, monochromatic outfits are mistaken for monotone outfits, while both are similar, there’s a slight difference. While monochromatic outfits are made up of color variation from a single hue, monotone outfits are made up of one variation of a color.

To be more specific, a baby pink pants and a baby pink shirt, layered with a baby pink blazer, styled with dark pink shoes and handbag equals monotone outfit. While a dark pink pants and a baby pink shirt styled with fuchsia pink shoes and handbag equals a monochromatic outfit.

Another outfit color combination that’s often mistaken for monochrome is tonal outfits. Now while they’re closely related, they are definitely not the same. Tonal outfits are achieved through the combination of different colors that are in the same color family. A color family is a group of colors that are relatively close on the color wheel.

An example of a tonal outfit would be pairing a hot red skirt with a Dutch orange top and bright pink accessories. If you look at the color wheel below, you’ll see that they qualify as a color family because they’re on the same part of the color wheel.
